PETALING JAYA: MEF looks forward to engage with the government on the proposal to widen the workers’ social safety net under the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), as announced by the Minister of Human Resources YB Dato’ Seri M. Saravanan in the media recently.
“MEF’s interests extends beyond that of employers because the safety and health of employees and the overall wellbeing of the Malaysian economy are factors of great concern to employers,” said MEF President Dato’ Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman J.P. today.
He said that MEF acknowledges that the cost of services has gone up and the demand for services by all SOCSO members has increased, but adds that the review of the rates of contributions should be conducted in tandem with a review of the overall benefits.
“The timing of such implementations is also very critical as most employers and employees are currently on survival mode and are still suffering due to the Covid-19 situation.
“If all goes well, we anticipate that it will take about one to two years from now to reach pre-Covid economic environment.
“We are also thankful and comforted by the assurances expressed by YB Dato’ Sri Saravanan to uphold Good Regulatory Practices and that any increases in the rates of contribution will not burden the rakyat and employers.
“Whatever the outcome of the studies, we hope to be fully engaged in the discussions to provide inputs from the stakeholders and be privy to the findings.”
