RANK and file employees were the major benefactors in anticipation of the implementation of National Minimum Wages as the latest MEF salary survey publications revealed that the nonexecutives were granted the highest ever average salary increases in the past decade.
Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) President Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Azman Shah Dato’ Seri Haron, in launching the MEF Salary Surveys for Executives and Non-Executives 2012 in Petaling Jaya today, said non-executives employees were granted an average salary increase of 5.83 per cent in 2012, which was significantly higher than the 5.37 per cent in 2011.
“In fact, the 5.83 per cent average salary increase was the highest recorded by MEF’s series of survey publications for non-executives since the past 10 years. We attribute this spike to the implementation of national minimum wages which will come into effect on the 1st of January
2013,” said Tan Sri Azman.
“Conversely, the average salary increases for executives was lower at 6.29 per cent as compared to 6.45 per cent in 2011.”
With regards to the overall average forecasted salary increase, Tan Sri Azman said executives may expect a higher increment of 6.44 per cent in 2013 as compared to the actual average salary increase of 6.29 per cent in 2012.
“For the non-executives, the average forecasted salary increase in 2013 was also higher at 6.55 per cent as compared 5.83 per cent in 2012,” he added.
Besides the 18th edition of the MEF Salary Surveys for Executives and Non-Executives 2012, MEF also launched the 7th edition of the MEF Analysis for Collective Agreements and Awards on Terms and Conditions of Employment 2011, and the inaugural edition of the MEF Survey on Work-Life Balance.
The launching ceremony was also witnessed by MEF Council Members Dato’ Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman, Dr Michael Chiam Tow Hui, Hj. Razali Dato’ Hj. Rahmat and Executive Director Hj. Shamsuddin Bardan.
In terms of bonus payments, Tan Sri Azman said 87.8 per cent of companies granted bonus to either all or certain executives in 2012, which was higher than 82.4 per cent in 2011. In the case of nonexecutives, 89.7 per cent were granted bonus in 2012 as against 81.9 per cent in 2011.
The average forecasted bonus for executives for 2013 was 2.2 months – lower than the 2.42 months of actual bonus in 2012.
In contrast, the non-executives may look forward to higher bonus than the 1.96 months of actual bonus received this year as the forecasted bonus for 2013 was 2.02 months.
