PETALING JAYA: Recently the Minister of Human Resources, YB Tuan Steven Sim, announced the increase on the appointment of the Industrial Court Chairman to 4 years from the previous term of 2 years. The initiative taken by YB Tuan Steven gives better security of tenure of Chairmen of Industrial Court and removes the anxiety of Chairmen on whether their appointments will be renewed at the end of 2 years.
The MEF President, Datuk Dr. Syed Hussain Syed Husman P.J.N., J.P. states that “The longer appointment term will attract more qualified practitioners to be Chairmen of Industrial Court especially those who wish to build their career at the Industrial Court. The longer appointment term will also reduce the time taken on the renewal process which previously had to be done every 2 years.”
“YB tuan Steven Sim may wish to consider the possibility of offering permanent appointment to those fixed term contract Chairmen that discharged their roles and responsibilities superbly.” Adds Datuk Dr. Syed Hussain.
“Previously among the issues raised by MEF was that the appointment of the Industrial Court chairman was too short and the process of appointing new Chairman and renewal of appointment of Chairman was tedious and time consuming”
Datuk Dr. Syed Hussain stated further that “YB Tuan Steven Sim may consider the setting up of Special Task Force Court to help clear up the backlog of cases piling up at the Industrial Court. MEF understands that the backlog cases number can be well above 4,000 cases and it would be very challenging for the existing Chairmen to clear the backlog. At the same time new cases referred to the Court may exceed 2,000 cases per year.”
“MEF is confident with the leadership of YB Tuan Steven Sim and looks forward to work closely with the Minister and his team at MoHR to establish better business environment and enhancing Malaysia’s competitiveness to be within the top 12 in the World Competitiveness Index as envisaged in the Malaysia Madani Economy Framework a reality.”
