MEF Press Release

The Government’s decision to rein in Covid-19 pandemic is ‘the right thing to do’Monday, 11 January 2021
Press Release

PETALING JAYA: MEF has called on employers to abide strictly by the latest Movement Control Order (MCO) to be enforced in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, Selangor, Penang, Malacca, Johor and Sabah beginning on 13th January to 26th January 2021.

The government will also enforce the Conditional Movement Order (CMCO) for Pahang, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan; and the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) for Perlis and Sarawak during the same period.

MEF President Dato’ Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman J.P., in responding to the announcement on the MCO by the Prime Minister YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Monday, has urged all employers to fully support the government’s efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19 and to flatten the curve of new infections and the number of fatalities.

“As MEF, we have given to the government our views on the impact of full MCO on both large companies and SMEs, and the great difficulties that we are still facing,” said Dato’ Dr Syed Hussain.

Dato’ Dr Syed Hussain added that at the moment, the survivability of most companies very much hinges on the support the employers are able to receive from the government. MEF hopes that some of the measures introduced during the MCO in March 2020  such as the Employment Retention Programme, Wages Subsidy Programme (WSP) and loan moratorium for both employees and employers especially the small and micro enterprises be reintroduced. Currently, the WSP is applicable to the hotel and retail sectors only.

“But we believe the YAB Prime Minister and the government are doing their best to control the spread of Covid-19. We also believe that the Director General of Health and the medical community too are facing difficult times in trying to balance lives and livelihoods of the public. At the end of the day, the human life is sacred and we must all come together to support what is right for the people and our nation,” said Dato’ Dr Syed Hussain.
